    All the people who did not become widely known for whatever reason, yet touched someone or even many to help them see the folly of it all.

  7. Here’s a story of, I guess a heroine. This was just received.

    This weekend we learned that our dear friend Sister Jackie Hudson, a Catholic nun, recently arrested again for yet another act of protest against the endless war machine appears to have had a heart attack inside the Irwin County Detention Facility in the state of Georgia. It is one of the new “privatized” jails where the lines of authority are blurred and for that reason they have decided that Jackie doesn’t need to be sent to a hospital. For the last several days lawyers and doctors and supporters of Jackie have been calling the jail and anyone else they can reach. I called the jail last night and talked to the “supervisor” who told me Jackie is fine inside the jail medical room. I asked that my message be passed on to the “warden” when she returns to work today but I was told that would not be possible because it would be a “violation of personnel policies” to transmit that call. You can make a call to demand Jackie be taken to a proper hospital: ask for Warden Barbara Walrath – .

    Also on my list of heroes are all of those invisible, anonymous among us. Those who do good with no expectation of reward - like the guy who stopped by on a cold winter day. He was driving an old, beat-up pickup truck with a plow on the front.  He was obviously poor - one of the local ‘plow-guys’ just trying to survive. He saw me shoveling snow and asked if I needed help.  I said that I had no money to pay him. He proceeded to plow in 20 minutes, what would have taken me all day.  I thanked him profusely and asked him what his name was. He said, “Larry”.  To all of the Larrys in the world I offer a vote of appreciation.

  9. Joe #6...You just reminded me of all of those who protest and get arrested every year at the USA school to train terrorists - the SOA, including Father Bourgeois (Spelling?)

    Also, all of the political prisoners being held in US prisons, including Attorney Lynne Stewart - sentence increased to 10 years because she forwarded a press release at the request of her client. She has cancer and is in her 70s.

    Everyone who speaks out publicly against war and injustice is a hero because it is certain that a price will be paid for speaking out - especially in small towns.

  10. Here’s another hero - Alden Graves- Not because he wrote a nice review of my book last week, but because in his column today he rejoiced over the ending of the Oprah show. He is the first I have seen do that. It is my opinion that that show did more to dumb-down US citizens (especially females) than any other single program in the history of television.

Memorial Day honors for the socialists, communists, and anarchists who filled the ranks of WWII resistance units (other political groupings were too busy collaborating or buffing their resumes). Many partisans were successful enough that the US Army stepped into Nazi boots and attacked them. ‘Spreading freedom and democracy,’ some call it.

    RMJ, I’ve got to find that Alden Graves piece about Oprah. Notwithstanding her accidental brush with reality vs. the meat industry, she’s been a menace for years - the forerunner of reality game shows.

  15. Zen #12, The Brits turned on the Greek Resistence, I don’t think they even waited for the war to finish first, higher priority was stopping Greece getting proper independence. The Brits used Japanese troops to fight the Vietnamese just after the war.

    The more you look at WWII the more difficult it is to answer questions like “Which side was that country on?”

    George Carlin said something along the lines of: “The Nazis lost the war, Fascism won”.

    Aye, Rick, the Allies (sic) attacked anyone not with their program. Only Tito got some decent postwar results, but those were put paid in the early 90’s.

    To close out Memorial Day let’s not forget the troops who invaded Russia in September 1918.

  17. Invading Russia. An invasion led by Winston Churchill, British Minister of War (nowadays called Minister of Defence obviously).

    He was once voted our “Greatest Briton ever”. I nearly swallowed my tongue!

    Churchill said that the Palestinians were like a dog in a manger, and that just because a dog is in a manger...doesn’t give the right to stay there. He’d fit into modern British politics.

    Ooo, a statistic from British Magazine ‘Private Eye’: Percentage of British people in prison is 0.13%
    Percentage of British Members of Parliament (MPs) in prison...0.62%

    Some shops have signs in the window saying “No more than 2 children in the shop at one time” (to try and stop shop lifting). One shop put up a sign saying “No more than two MPs in the shop at any time”. Genius!
